FTI [Förpacknings- och Tidningsinsamlingen] runs a national collection system of packages. At 5000 recycling stations you can recycle old packages made out of paper, plastic, metal and glass.
These recycling stations are located all over Sweden which means a difficult logistical challenge in order to have an efficient waste management.
Customer need:
FTI want to make the waste collection more sustainable and efficient. The amount of packaging in the containers changes sharply and especially during the pandemic.
- If a container is not emptied in time, it often leads to littering.
- Littering is a problem at many recycling stations and FTI wants to reduce this.
- At the same time, many containers are emptied too quickly before they are full.
- By reducing the number of unnecessary pick-ups, FTI can improve routes and reduce the amount of heavy transport. Therefore, the environmental impact of the recycling process is reduced.
Bintels solution:
1300 waste containers have been connected to 333 recycling stations in southern Sweden. The containers fill level is measured by the Bintel Level device. Since the project is implemented in 23 municipalities and covers a large geographical area, both LoRaWAN and Narrowband IoT [mobile] connectivity are used.
Both fill level data and data from FTI´´s inventory and business management systems are integrated into Bintels cloud plattform called "Bintel Brain". By using Bintel Brain, your waste management becomes intelligent.
This plattform makes FTI´ s waste collection more flexible and dynamic. Resource utilization [trucks, personnel, fuel, ...] is only used to empty full containers at the right time. At the same time all routes are optimized.
