SenseIoT AI: AI enhanced

Few of us think about the impact of water damage to our properties until it’s too late and the damage is done.
According to a report from ConsumerView, titled ‘Quantitative Assessment in Europe’, 50% of households in Europe have experienced water damage. Similarly, the Insurance Industry Research organization estimates that 14,000 people in the US experience a water damage
emergency at home or work every day and the annual cost to insurance companies is approximately US$2.5 billion. When it comes to water damage, there is no doubt that the cost to owners and insurers can be crippling for citizens throughout the world.

iioote consulted with insurance companies, water and sewage utilities to expand on its water leakage detection solutions for the home. The enhanced SenseIoT applications monitor for abnormalities in humidity in real time, and quickly deploy in pipes, water meters and pumps for large buildings and industrial stations, as well as basements and bathrooms in the home. Solutions leverage LPWAN/3GPP connectivity and utilize AI and machine learning to add enhanced functionality and damage prevention.

Challenge or problem: Onset of black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) in buildings. Integrated into iioote’s technology agnostic platform WebIoT, the algorithm developed by Viking Analytics uses data collected by sensors to detect variations in temperature and humidity that indicate the risk of fungus growth, known for causing damage in construction materials such as fiber-board and drywall.
Solution: Humidity, temperature, and leakage sensors are installed in places where there is a high risk of water damage, as bathrooms, kitchens, water distribution pipes, and drain systems, where they constantly register and transmit measurements. The information is then sent to a platform, in which an anomaly detection algorithm constantly analyzes it and detects levels that could favour the development of black mold. The analysis is displayed in a user-friendly interface and triggers a notification when the risk level rises, so experts can decide which actions to take based on the data. SMS and e-mail alarms can also be configured.
Result: While iioote’s legacy solutions provided real-time leak detection and status, the introduction of AI and machine learning to the platform allows for greater trend analysis and prediction of leakage events, further helping prevent costly water damage and enable a swift response before a leak occurs. The use of Artificial Intelligence saves time spent in manually going through the data and allows even professionals without a background in data science to analyze and make decisions based on it. The solution has been tested by the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE) in a four-month test of a warning system for moisture and water damage. The conclusion of the measurements found that, when appropriate and correctly placed sensors are used, a water leak can be detected at an early stage thereby avoiding consequential damages. Minimization of the expansion of a water leak can also be enabled
