IoT Road Quality Monitoring System
Using IoT to continuously monitor road surface conditions by equipping public service vehicles with a set of sensors to enable assessment of the roads’ quality.
Feasibility, reach and impact
Today's road surface measurements are often time consuming, labor intensive, costly in equipment, limited to select roads, and prone to inaccuracy. By optimizing the way these measurements are done, municipalities can more efficiently use their resources.
Many public vehicles, for example, buses, are driving on our public roads on a daily basis. Leveraging this already existing daily activity, public vehicles can be equipped with IoT devices that continuously measure road surface conditions. It has been demonstrated that the necessary IoT devices can be much cheaper than existing tools today but still provide accurate results.*
To gather the data, the IoT road quality monitoring system can be directly integrated within the LaRoWAN system. A similar solution was implemented in Karlstad using LaRoWAN to measure road surface temperature which resulted in time and monetary savings.**
The IoT road quality monitoring system will help planning for correct and efficient preventative measures and thus increasing road longevity, which in turn results in lower fuel consumption and less wear on vehicles driving on the road. Finally, using IoT to monitor road conditions and efficiently plan maintenance will save the municipality’s resources (time & money).
