Irrigation Solution for Public Spaces with LoRaWAN®
The summer in Sweden looks different and plantings often require different humidity depending on the plant, location, soil type and environment. The task of the sensors is to show moisture curves via presentation in a mobile app and on a website and with set alarm limits make it easier for personnel who carry out irrigation. The sensors measure water pressure at two different levels to make irrigation more accurate. By knowing how moist the soil is, there is no need for unnecessary transport, dehydration or overwatering.
Challenge or problem:
Overwatering and dehydration can lay waste to investments made in plants and greenery for public spaces. Varying soil types, and factors connected to planting locations within a city or municipality makes estimates based on weather data alone a blunt tool for precise decision making. Manual control routes are time consuming and costly, and often requires expertise to be reliable. Additionally, any resources spent on redundant transportation of water could be better used elsewhere
Solution:
To bridge this problem, the Technology and Property Management Division of Karlstad Municipality opted for a wireless solution that can transfer soil moisture data from plantings spread out over large areas. The data is then visualized in the form of moisture curves in a mobile app, and used as a support tool for the personnel responsible for irrigating the plantings.
Result:
Having the insight provided through real-time soil moisture data resulted in an elimination of unnecessary water transports, dehydration and overwatering of plantings. Wasteful aspects of the irrigation processes also became troubles of the past.
